From Holland
Our oldest known Kinst relative is Andries Kunst “Andrew” who lived in Holland in the 1700’s. He was married to Geetje Paasje “Gertude” they had a son Lambertus Henricus Kunst “Lambert” in 1776. Lambert married Adiaantje Steehouwer “Jane” in early 1800. They had four children; daughter Geertrui in 1805, son Cornelis in 1808, son Gerrit in 1812, and son Peter in 1814. They were all born in Barendrecht, Zuid-Holland (South Holland).
Cornelis married Adiaantje Van Driel ”Jane” in 1835 in Grotte Lindt Holland. They had five children; Leendert Kunst in 1837 (died in 1837), son Lambertus Hendrikus Kunst “Lambert” in 1838 (picture at left), son Leendert Kunst in 1843 (died in 1843) , son Leendert Kunst in 1845, and Daughter Cornelia Kunst in 1847 (died in 1847).

To the U.S and Illinois
Lambert immigrated to the U.S. around 1860 and married Aaltje De Young (de Jong) “Alice” sometime between 1866 and 1868. Alice had immigrated from Holland in 1866. They settled in Illinois and had four children; daughter "Ada" Aderzana "Jennie" Jane Kunst in 1868, son Rijkart "Rykert" (Richard) in 1869, son Cornelius in 1870, and son Adam “Ed”. It is unclear how and why the family name was changed from Kunst to Kinst but all of Alice and Lambert’s children took the name Kinst.
Lambert and Alice’s son Cornelius met Maggie Piersma after she immigrated from Holland in 1881, they were married on January 19, 1893 and settled in Roseland Illinois where they had eight children; son William “Bill” in 1893, daughter Grace in 1895, son Henry in 1897, son Cornelius Jr “Cornie”. in 1900, son Elmer “Al” in 1903, son Peter in 1905, son Edward in 1908, and son George in 1910.

Out to California
Bill was the first of the children to leave Illinois and go to California. Durring WWI he was a flying mechanic in the Army Air Corp. stationed in Redlands California. It was there he met Erua Freel. They were married just before he was shipped back to Illinois to be discharged from the Army. She would join him shortly after he was discharged. Finally having enough of the bad winters in Chicago the couple moved to Oakland California. There they would have three children; son George in 1920, son Willian “Bill Jr.” in 1924 and daughter Barbara in 1931. All of Bill’s siblings would follow him to California over time. Grace, Henry, Cornie, and Peter stayed, Al, Edward and George would return to Illinois.

Lambertus Hendrikus Kunst “Lambert”
His father dies in 1847 when he was nine years old. Immigrates to the U.S. sometime in late 1850’s
By 1861 he is in Illinois and enlisted in the Union Army on November 20 1861

Lambertus Hendrikus Kunst “Lambert”
Lambert’s father died in 1847 when he was nine years old, and three of his four siblings died within a year of their birth. He immigrated to the U.S. sometime in late 1850’s He was living in Illinois when he enlists in the Union Army on November 20 1861
Lambert was in three battles during the Civil War; the battle of Ford Donelson, the battle of Fort Henry, and the Battle of Shiloh. In April of 1862 at the battle of Siloh he was captured and becomes a POW. He was one of 2,000 Union solders captured on the first day of the battle. He was held for eight months in a Confederate prison before being released and sent back to Illinois in December of 1862. He was discharged from the Union Army on March 3rd of 1863. His mother Jane and possibly his young brother Leendert join him in the U.S. in 1864.
Some time around 1866 he met and married Alice De Young in Roseland Illinois. They had four children between 1868 and 1847. In the 1870 cencus they are listed as living in Hyde Park Ill. and owning $ 1,000 in real estate, plus have $ 200 personal estate. He was listed as a farmer living with one year old son Rykert, two year old daughter Jane and his Mother age 63. It is interesting that his wife Alice is not listed.
His war experience and business failures resulted in serious metal issues. A warrant for his arrest was issued on September 26, 1874. He had been declared insane by a jury and was to be conveyed to the Illinois State Hospital for the Insane at Elgin, IL. The inquisition stated that the insanity was believed to be temporary and the cause was unknown. It also stated that he did not manifest homicidal or suicidal tendencies. He was present during the inquisition and was able to defend himself. It is believed he died one year later in 1875.
Eight months after he was sent to Elgin, his wife Alice married William Ooms, the owner of the grocery store where she worked. They would have three sons between 1878 and 1900.
